Debut Release By UK Prog Band Lifesigns Featuring Guest Appearances By Steve Hackett, Thijs Van Leer (Focus) and Jakko Jakszyk (King Crimson) Now Available On Esoteric Antenna Records

London, UK – Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the latest release on new front-line label, Esoteric Antenna, dedicated to new releases by both new acts and established artists. Lifesign’s eponymous release has the hallmarks of being one of the finest progressive rock albums of 2013! Making the album even more impressive is the guest appearances from such respected figures in progressive music as Steve Hackett, Thijs Van Leer (focus), Jakko Jakszyk (King Crimson), and Robin Boult (John Young Band).

Lifesigns features John Young (keyboards, lead vocals), Nick Beggs (bassist, Chapman Stick player, backing vocals) and Frosty Beedle (drums). The material reflects the excellence of the musicians who perform on the album. John Young is a classically trained composer, keyboardist and vocalist, who has worked with the likes of Asia, the Strawbs, Greenslade, Fish, Uli Jon Roth and his own John Young Band. He also tours with Bonnie Tyler. Bassist/Stick player Nick Beggs was the founding member of 80s group Kajagoogoo and has worked with artists like Alphaville, Belinda Carlise, John Paul Jones, Gary Newman, Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, Tina Turner and many others. He is currently on tour with Steven Wilson. Drummer Frosty Beedle has worked with the likes of the Cutting Crew, Sarah Brightman, Russell Watson and Zucchero.

Here’s what the press have been raving about Lifesign’s debut album:

“’Lifesigns’ is a tremendous listening experience… It’s extremely well written, the playing is superbly engaging, tones are tweaked to perfection, and the vocals are just amazing!” – Tony Conley, Rock Guitar Daily

“This is a stunning example of when Prog gets it right!” – Music-News.com

“These fine musicians have created quite their own ‘voice’, a fresh new leaf on the solid old progtree and what a leaf!!” – Prog Planet

“There have been precious few modern British bands making albums on the same level as the classic symphonic bands, you know, the ones who invented progressive rock. Which makes Lifesigns a nearly a national treasure. You’ll hear similarities to Peter Gabriel, YES, Genesis, National Health, Happy The Man, Bruford, and a couple others we’re overlooking, but it doesn’t sound retro or derivative. We don’t often write ‘must have’ but there, we’ve done it!” – Kenesis

Working with engineer Steve Rispin (Asia, Uriah Heep, Dave Kilminster, Snakecharmer), ‘Lifesigns’ is a tuneful, innovative and hugely impressive debut album certain to appeal to those who appreciate the finer aspects of modern Progressive Rock.

Chapel Hill Singer/Songwriter Tokyo Rosenthal To Be Honored In Ireland

Chapel Hill, NC – Award winning singer/songwriter, Tokyo Rosenthal, will be honored by Ireland’s The Gathering Clare on May 10th in Killaloe, County Clare, for writing and recording “Killaloe”. Rosenthal wrote and recorded the tune about the town that his Aunt and Uncle called home in the late 70′s and early 80′s. Tokyo returned there this past September for a live performance and that inspired the song which appears on his latest CD, “Tokyo’s Fifth”.

“Killaloe” made its international radio debut on January 5th earlier this year on Clare FM Radio. The album subsequently hit number 4 on the Euro Americana Chart, Tokyo’s highest position to date on that chart. The ceremony will take place at The Anchor Inn in Killaloe at 4pm. Tokyo will also play a free solo concert immediately following the ceremony, also at The Anchor Inn. This will kick off a two week Ireland/UK tour for Rosenthal, his sixth such tour.

“My Aunt and Uncle could never have imagined that I’d be receiving this honor in 2013 or any time for that matter, I’m overwhelmed!”, said Rosenthal. “Killaloe and County Clare are some of my favorite parts of the world. I’m glad I could further immortalize this gem of people and land in a song. I thank everyone at The Gathering Clare, Clare FM, The Anchor Inn, and “the locals” for all the support and opening up their arms to me. Seeya all soon.”

Speaking of Tokyo’s upcoming visit to County Clare in May, Monica Meehan, The Gathering coordinator for County Clare said,”2013 is a special year for Ireland: it is the year of The Gathering and there is no better place to be than County Clare. The Gathering Clare 2013 Steering Group has undertaken a number of initiatives to promote The County and to support festival and event organizers throughout the year and extends a warm welcome to all. The Group is delighted to welcome back Tokyo Rosenthal to Killaloe. To mark his visit, the Mayor of Clare, Councillor Pat Daly, will pay tribute to Tokyo for his song
‘Killaloe’ at this upcoming civic event.”

On the recording, Tokyo sang, played guitar, and handled percussion. He was joined on the track by Chatham County Line’s John Teer on fiddle and Chris Stamey of the dB’s on bass. Rosenthal records on the Rock & Sock Records label.

Rosenthal will be performing two other concerts in Ireland(Galway and Kildare) before heading to Scotland and England. His full tour schedule is available at http://www.tokyorosenthal.com . Copies and downloads of “Killaloe”, “Tokyo’s Fifth”, or any of Tokyo Rosenthal’s recordings are available at CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com/cd/tokyorosenthal8) , iTunes(https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/tokyos-fifth/id589577325), Amazon.com and at CD Stores worldwide including FYE Stores.

Virtuoso Electric Bassist JEFF BERLIN To Release LOW STANDARDS On RANDOM ACT RECORDS Available April 16

Virtuoso Electric Bassist JEFF BERLIN To Release LOW STANDARDS
On RANDOM ACT RECORDS
Available April 16

Tampa, FL – JEFF BERLIN has been called the greatest electric bass soloist in the world. While the terms “great” and “genius” are bantered about much too frequently, the accolades for Jeff Berlin are not hyperbolical – Jeff is indisputably one of the best bass players to ever play his chosen instrument. Geddy Lee (bass player for RUSH) calls Jeff “The greatest bass player on the planet,” while the late Jaco Pastorius considered Berlin a better soloist than he was. Known worldwide for his innovative style, Jeff has graced bandstands and recordings with legendary players like Bill Bruford, Dennis Chambers, Neil Peart, Billy Cobham, and Allan Holdsworth, and has led bands and recorded his own CDs for nearly 30 years. He has recorded for vocalists Patti Austin and KD Lang; he has traversed the progressive rock realm with former YES members Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe; Jeff famously turned down an offer to join rockers VAN HALEN. Jeff is also hailed outside the usual musician ranks: Actor Gary Sinise (also a bassist) is one of his biggest fans, and renowned boxing trainer and ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas refers to Jeff as “the best in the business.” From straight ahead Jazz to Fusion to Prog-Rock: Jeff plays it all, always at the very highest level of proficiency and musicality.

On his debut release on RANDOM ACT RECORDS, Jeff and his incredible cohorts, Acoustic Bassist//Pianist Richard Drexler and Drummer Mike Clark, offer a sizzling set of Jazz standards. Drexler, one of the most versatile of jazz players, nimbly switches from upright bass to acoustic piano, or vice versa, on most tracks. Having performed for years with Berlin, his walking lines and supportive grooves perfectly blend with the leader’s electric voice. Clark’s percussion discussions are legendary: Initially making a mark on the international scene with Herbie Hancock’s funkified Headhunters, Mike is a jazz warrior at heart. Together, the trio present unique versions of strong material culled from the Jazz songbook.

Jeff comments about the inspiration behind LOW STANDARDS: “I wanted to play on a four stringed electric bass as a guitarist or pianist might play in the same situation. The concept of this CD was to leave me completely exposed as a player. On this recording, there was no way to hide from my present abilities as a bassist. Great players are always exposed in their abilities to play. For this reason, I always had Gary Burton or Keith Jarrett somewhere in my mind while I was recording the CD, wondering if they might play like I did if they played my instrument.”

Wayne Shorter, perhaps the most heralded of modern jazz composers, is well represented: Berlin and company burn on three of Shorter’s beguiling concoctions. “E.S.P.” kicks off the set, with Berlin stating the melody and Drexler’s bass lines walking in rhythm with Clark’s swinging ride cymbal. After Jeff amply illustrates his penchant for unmatched melodic improvisation, his electric instrument skips in tandem with Clark as Drexler moves to the ivories. On six of eight cuts, the trio represents as a quartet, thanks to Drexler’s multi-instrumental skills. Next up is “El Gaucho,” first heard on Shorter’s ADAM’S APPLE album. To complete the Shorter trilogy, the trio speaks no evil as they soar through “Fee Fi Fo Fum.” Berlin is the giant here, ingeniously stating the melody before launching into an astute improvisation. Drexler sticks to the upright, soloing with thoughtful elegance. One of only two piano-less tracks of the set, this outing touches all the basses, exposing new facets of Wayne’s compositional gem.

Fellow electric bassist Steve Swallow’s “Falling Grace” is awash in harmonic beauty; as on every track, Jeff reinforces the accolades accorded him by legions of fellow musicians. His distinctive voice on the electric is organic – It belies those who disdain a bass that requires an outlet. Swallow’s longtime partner Carla Bley penned “Vashkar,” a tune probably more associated with drummer Tony Williams and his groundbreaking group Lifetime. Drexler opens, and stays, at the piano; Berlin strives for new lows; Clark’s hi-hat and snare interplay nods to Tony.

Pianist Bill Evans’ lilting “Very Early” awakes with a more extroverted treatment compared to the composer’s retrospective approach. Benny Golson’s “Whisper Not” swings with Jeff speaking first, Richard eschewing the piano while soloing with his own low tones while Mike tips lightly. The stellar session closes with Pat Metheny’s modern classic “James,” the guitarist’s homage to one Mr. Taylor. Richard Drexler’s stately pianistic introduction leads to Jeff Berlin effortlessly executing the gorgeous melody, as Mike Clark ably supports the proceedings. The album appropriately concludes with Jeff’s unique, sustained ringing tone.

Jeff explains his song selections for his new release: “Because I am such a huge fan of Keith Jarrett’s ‘Standards’ CDs, I wanted to follow my last project, HIGH STANDARDS, with another standards recording, but this time playing on lesser-known tunes, lesser known to the general public… However, Jazz fans should know every tune that I chose to play. I chose compositions with lots of harmony so that I was forced to seek out non-typical bass lines. The harmony in these tunes demanded that I find something different to play on my bass. I also heard in my head how each composer played their own songs, often while we were recording. That was a strange experience.”

LOW STANDARDS is obviously an ironic title for an album that achieves such a pinnacle of musicality. Seldom, if ever, has the combination of two bass clef compadres created such a harmonious marriage of tone, verve and vigor. With this latest effort, Jeff Berlin proves, once again, that his is the highest standard of virtuosity in the low-end spectrum.

With Lush Arrangements & English Versions
‘Between Love & Luck’ Street Date: May 14th

São Paulo, Brazil – Badi Assad is one of the most innovative, passionate and talented artists of her generation and listed by Rolling Stone as a top guitarist from Brazil. She transcends traditional styles of her native Brazilian music with a mixture of pop, jazz and ethnic sounds from around the world. As a result, the singer, guitarist and songwriter is successfully forging an exhilarating genre of music that quite literally defies categorization. ‘Between Love and Luck’ is her first CD of all original material and sung in both English and Portuguese. It also debuts QuatroVentos her new independent label and first U.S. Release in 6 years.

“Badi Assad redefines guitar performances! Revelatory, a brilliant display of innovation, and skill…almost hypnotically compelling!” – Los Angeles Times

The repertoire of acoustic and electronic compositions features strong melodies and deeply personal lyrics of everyday and existential experiences of life, art and love. The themes deal with the past journeys and adventures – the latest ones such as motherhood, new love and new experiences in learning how to love and seek ones own balance. It also speaks of addictive behaviors like working too hard and dependent relationships. Some of the themes blend together in life. And because love is also chronic, in the literal sense of the word: it is long term, and happens repeatedly and often.

Badi sings, plays guitar on all tracks. Percussionist Guilherme Kastrup and multi-instrumentalist Marcio Arantes produced the album.

Badi was born in São Paulo, Brazil. The sister of Sérgio and Odair Assad, of the world renowned classical guitar duo The Assad Brothers, she began to play guitar when she was 14. Badi won international recognition by combining her talents as a singer, guitar player and vocal percussionist (simultaneously producing different vocal sounds), her recognized technical abilities and unquenchable thirst for innovation in her guitar playing has made her one of the most innovative artists of all time, maintaining a growing group of loyal fans, critics and fellow musicians worldwide.

On stage, Badi Assad reveals a complete and virtuoso artist. An enchanting diva, she sings, plays guitar, dances and transforms her own body in percussion – all at the same time! With ten CDs released around the world and many awards won, her last CD, ‘Wonderland’, was ranked one of the 100 best albums of the year by the BBC.

Badi was also voted one of the best guitarists in the world by Guitar Player Magazine. She has worked with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Yo-Yo Ma, Sarah McLachlan, Seu Jorge and Naná Vasconcelos among many others and performed in some of the most prestigious international festivals such as Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival/ Holland and theater such as L’Opera de Paris, Metropolitan Museum / New York, Palais de Beaux- Art /Bruxellas, and The Greek Theater / Los Angeles as well as appearing in the acclaimed FarmAid and Lilith Fair tours. In 2012 Badi also represented Brazil at the IV BRICS Summit, an event that brings together the major emerging economies of the world. She also performed with the Ballet Teatro Castro Alves at the prestigious Bienalle of Venice.

APCA (São Paulo Association of Art Clinics) – one of the most important awards in Brazil since 1972, recently awarded Badi for her work in songwriting and composition. The same evening the Brazilian icon Marisa Monte also graced the same stage.

Badi Assad will be touring across the USA in support of ‘Between Love and Luck’ in the summer of 2013. Select dates for this mid-summer tour include: July 13th & 14th at California World Fest in Grass Valley, CA, Various Bay Area shows including San Francisco and Santa Cruz, July 20th at Austin Chamber Music Society in Austin, TX and July 21st at City Winery in Chicago, IL. Indie-Rock/Alt-Folk Quintet Biv and the Mnemonics To Release New Full Length LP, ‘The Pace’ -
A Top Notch Sophomore Effort From the Bay Area’s Best-Kept Secret

San Francisco, CA – After four years of playing shows and gaining fans in the Bay Area and beyond, San Francisco band Biv and the Mnemonics is proud to release their 2nd full-length album, ‘The Pace’, on April 16th, 2013. The band, formerly known as Roy G Biv & The Mnemonic Devices, has produced a ten-track collection of quality songs and energetic harmonies evocative of the great folk-tinged rock of the past, while providing their own unique energy that can’t be resisted. ‘The Pace’ is an exciting and imminently listenable album; it’s warm, full of catchy melodies and hooks, and brimming with well-thought-out harmonies and eclectic instrumentation. TheBayBridged.com calls Biv and the Mnemonics “a folk rock band that owns a refreshingly uncalculated, cool style,” while SFAppeal.com calls ‘The Pace’ “a happy-go-lucky jaunt of indie folk goodness.”

College friends Dan Paggi and Ben Lang initially formed Biv and the Mnemonics in 2007, shortly after moving to San Francisco from the Northern California city of Chico. Their years spent there soaking in long summer days full of good times and a surprisingly vibrant music culture had an undeniable effect on their musical output, and their first collaboration together, 2009′s ‘The Blue Orange’, established the DNA of the group they would go on to create. They have since formed a cohesive and dynamic unit with Evan Wardell on guitar, Jessie Alsop on Keys and Vocals, and Landon Moblad on drums.

An instant connection sparked between the five, their synergy together producing a band whose laid-back sound celebrates the simple pleasures of life, and has been compared to artists ranging from The Kinks to Pavement and Dr. Dog. It’s this carefree energy that led to the creation of their admittedly odd moniker, a play on the acronym Roy G Biv (BIV being comprised of Blue Indigo Violet, as you may remember from your grade school science class).

Biv and the Mnemonics have spent the years since ‘The Blue Orange’ crafting their sound and playing shows throughout Northern California. With the help of Andrew Tavis and the Mission Street Recording Company (www.missionstreetrecording.com), the group entered the studio in 2011 to begin production on ‘The Pace’, their first LP effort as a full band. The result is an upbeat and melodic combination of ’60s rock, homegrown folk, a little country twang and funky, punk-ish rhythms that all manages to sound both warmly familiar and refreshingly new.

The quintet will be touring the Pacific Northwest throughout 2013, and has released singles from the album available for streaming at: http://www.soundcloud.com/bivandthemnemonics.

Punk Legends The Vibrators Celebrate 37 Years Of Punk Mania With New CD Release ‘On The Guest List’

Special guest appearances by members of Supersuckers, MC5, UK Subs, The Damned, The Stranglers, The Dickies and more!

Los Angeles, CA – One of the most legendary punk bands still bashing heads and flinging their sweat on stage, the Vibrators, are joined by a slew of VIP guests to celebrate 37 years of PUNK MANIA with the release of their new CD ‘On The Guest List’! To be released by Cleopatra Records on May 7, 2013, ‘On The Guest List’ features 13 all new tunes written and recorded by founding Vibrators members Knox and Eddie with longtime bassist Pete and engineering by original Vibrators bassist Pat Collier. Special guest appearances by members of Supersuckers, MC5, UK Subs, The Damned, The Stranglers, The Dickies and more!

Knox explains the origins behind the band’s new album, “The Vibrators’ drummer, Eddie, called me towards the end of 2011 and wanted me to come up with songs for a new Vibrators album. This would be the band’s 17th studio album of new songs, plus three old favorites. The idea was for us to perform the tracks and then guest artists would play an instrument or sing back-up vocals. The band duly went into Perry Vale Studios (owned by Vibrators original bass player Pat Collier) in March 2012 and spent a week or so producing tracks with myself and Pete (bass) singing the lead vocals. Over the years, the band has done a lot of recording with Pat so it all proceeded very well. Mixes of the songs were then sent off to various musicians either we knew (Chris Spedding, Hugh Cornwell, Campino, Leonard Graves Phillips, Walter Lure and Brian James) and others to see if they’d be interested in contributing to being ‘On The Guest List’ and this is the result.”

With a career lasting 37 years, vocalist/guitarist Ian “Knox” Carnochan, bassist Pat Collier, guitarist John Ellis and drummer Eddie originally formed the Vibrators in February 1976, and their first gig was supporting The Stranglers at Homsey Art College in North London. They supported The Sex Pistols at the 100 club and were one of the bands playing at the now legendary 100 Club Punk Festival, where along with doing their own set they supported guitar hero Chris Spedding. Chris, in turn, recommended the band to his then record label RAK. In early 1977, the band signed with Epic Records and supported Iggy Pop (with David Bowie on keyboards) on a UK tour. Their classic single “Baby Baby”, followed by their first album ‘Pure Mania’ which spent five weeks in the UK Top 75, peaked at number 49. Through the years, after a number of member changes, and numerous critically acclaimed, teeth gnashing, gob smashing releases, in March 2010 the Vibrators returned to being a three-piece: Knox (guitar/vocals), Pete (bass) and Eddie (drums). In their long career the Vibrators have toured with the likes of Iggy Pop, Ian Hunter, The Flaming Groovies, Die Toten Hosen, and have had their songs covered by The Exploited, UK Subs, GBH, REM, Die Toten Hosen, to name but a few. In 2010 the band did more than 130 gigs! Now in 2013, the Vibrators celebrate 37 years of making records and touring heavily with the release of ‘On The Guest List’. Get ready for many more years of PURE PUNK MANIA!

Says bassist Pete, “Making the album has been an exciting experience. We recorded our parts in London with Pat Collier and sent the tracks to the US where guest artists recorded their parts without any input from us. To collaborate this way is risky because, we as a band and songwriters, can have different views on how the songs should sound from the artist who adds their parts to our songs. But hearing the finished album, we are happy with the finished songs. Well done to all our guests.”

Tracks include:
“View From My Cadillac” featuring Walter Lure (The Heartbreakers)
“2nd Skin” featuring Chris Spedding
“Automatic Lover” featuring Ty Segal
“Every Dog” featuring Brian James (The Damned)
“Prisoner In The Mirror” featuring Wayne Kramer (MC5)
“Turn Up The Heat” featuring Tomomi Nabana (Detroit Seven)
“Rain To Town” featuring Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers)
“Baby Baby” featuring Campino (Die Toten Hosen)
“Birdland Is Closed” featuring Ross The Boss (The Dictators)
“One More” featuring Tony Lovato (Mest)
“My Stalker” featuring Eddie Spaghetti & Dan “Thunder” Bolton (Supersuckers)
“Rock ‘n’ Roll Clown” featuring Bill Davis (Dash Rip Rock)
“The Ohio” featuring Nicky Garratt (UK Subs)
“Whips And Furs” featuring Leonard Graves Phillips & Stan Lee (The Dickies)
“Long Beach Police” featuring James Donovan & Lome Behrman (The Dead Tricks)
“Voodoo Eye” featuring Mickey Finn (Cold Blue Rebels)

Says Eddie, “Having completed the album there was a sense of dread that the guests would mess it up, but the finished result met with great approval. As usual, Knox’s songs were all great and he is always open to ideas and other people’s interpretations, so the recording was great fun. Pat always has an innate understanding of what we’re after and gives his time and ideas freely. Then of course Pete is a superb player and singer. What more could you ask for!”

In support of the release of ‘On The Guest List’ a worldwide tour has been scheduled throughout 2013 with stops in the States during the months of September and October. In closing Knox has this to impart, “I’d like to thank all of the people involved in the project including the people who turned us down – until next time!”

Guitar Virtuoso Todd Grubbs Releases Two New Albums – ‘Best Of The Guests’ and ‘Toddities volume 2′

Tampa, FL – One of the most talented and innovative guitarists to emerge from Florida, Todd Grubbs has released two new albums digitally in March 2013 – ‘Best Of The Guests’ and ‘Toddities volume 2′. Todd Grubbs, who studied at Berklee College of Music, has been voted ‘Most Outstanding Guitarist’ at the Tampa Bay Music Awards, as well as winning the ‘Most Outstanding Video’ two consecutive years in a row. His guitar prowess has been touted by critics and fans worldwide, and can be witnessed on all his solo albums. Todd has surrounded himself with an array of legendary music artists and musicians which is the inspiration behind the album ‘Best of The Guests’.

‘Best of the Guests’ features Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Black Country Communion), Bryan Beller (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, The Aristocrats), Mike Keneally (Zappa, Solo), Sean Malone (Cynic), Blues Saraceno (Poison, Transmission OK), Chris Poland (Megadeth, Ohm), Don Preston (Zappa), John Wesley (Porcupine Tree), Jerry Outlaw (Bogus Pomp), Pattrick Bettison (Acoustic Alchemy), Mark Prator (Iced Earth), and Ralph Santola (Obituary).

Says Todd, “I have had quite a few amazing players make guest appearances on my albums over the years, so I decided it would be cool to put them all together on one release. I have always been honored that these great musicians would agree to perform on my compositions and their contributions have been stellar across the board. The CD includes one new track I recorded featuring Byran Beller on bass.”

Along with Frank Zappa, Grubbs influences, which can be heard throughout both his new releases, range from Steve Vai, John Coltrane, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Ulli Jon Roth and Adrian Belew.

“Todd takes us to some places we have not been with his playing as well as giving us some of that Zappaesque influenced wild arrangement sensibility that has been a part of his playing for years.” – John Wesley (Porcupine Tree)

The second release is ‘Toddities volume 2′, a collection of esoteric recording by Todd Grubbs. Todd explains, “The CD includes some of my more ‘out there’ recordings that did not fit on other releases. It is really cool how these orphaned songs come together and form their own continuity as if it was a planned out project.”

Currenty Todd is working on a couple of albums worth of vocal tunes with a lot of great singers. Says Todd, “I plan to release at least one of these in 2014. Beyond this I am producing writing and recording with a number of young artists and bands covering a wide variety of styles.”

In closing Todd imparts to his fans and listeners, “I would like to thank everyone who has enjoyed my music over the years, I really love making music and to have people out there that support what I do is amazing esp… with the current music industry situation being in a state of flux so to speak. I have always created my music on my own terms and I am very proud of my work to this point.”

Prolific LA Songwriter/Musician Bob Beland Makes Back Catalog Available To The Public Through Soundcloud

Los Angeles, CA – In a bold move by any music artist, prolific LA songwriter/musician Bob Beland, who has been active in the music industry since the early 1970′s, has decided to make available free for public listening his entire back catalog on Soundcloud. This also includes his recent critically acclaimed album release ‘Mar Vista’; a collection of songs written by Bob between 2010 and 2012 and it’s instrumental companion EP, ‘Forward & Backworks,’ both recorded at his home studio in Los Angeles, Wrong Way Works. Says Bob, “’Mar Vista’ for me is kind of a throwback to the old Buffalo Springfield records and their eclectic unpredictable nature. ‘Forward & Backworks’ is a concept for orchestra that includes two pieces also found on ‘Mar Vista.’”

And why make his music available to listen to for free? Bob explains, “Soundcloud affords for the first time in my career an opportunity to give the public open access to my collected works as opposed to just a few songs or edited samples. Like most songwriters and composers I’ve always wanted as many people as possible to hear the music I’ve written over the years and hopefully enjoy the experience. Soundcloud makes that wish possible. It’s a little bit like owning your own personal radio station for people to hear your music. Soundcloud also brings to the artist considerable online traffic to tap into. Since I don’t perform live or tour I feel that it’s more important for people to have the opportunity to hear my music for free as opposed to trying to make that happen through the traditional retail sales and touring oriented approach. I’m much more concerned about acquiring listeners and followers than consumers right now. My music will only gain value through people hearing it and eventually wanting it for their own. Once that demand develops I can consider facilitating the consumer’s requests. Soundcloud also helps me in referring recording artists, producers, film and media music supervisors a reliable, accessible place to go to for consideration without all of the old mailing or physical content hassles. Soundcloud gives the world instant access to my music and that’s fantastic in my book. I sincerely hope that it’s an enjoyable experience for everyone who stops by.”

Bob Beland’s diverse career spans over four decades. Originally hailing from Hometown, IL, a small suburb outside of Chicago, his first exposure to music came from local AM radio and his older brother Jack “John” Beland’s first band The Mods. His brother John was to go on to an illustrious music career of his own highlighted by his tenure in the legendary Flying Burrito Bros. By 1964 the British invasion was in full swing and the influence was strongly felt by Bob who was an avid listener of band’s like The Beatles, Dave Clark 5 and US acts like the Bobby Fuller Four. In 1965, his family migrated to Los Angeles, where Bob began taking formal drum training in high school. By graduation he took interest in guitar and began learning to play on his brother John’s guitar. Bob relates, “One problem though, my brother is right handed and I am left handed. Being left handed and not being able to reverse the strings posed quite a problem that I’d have to figure out for myself. So I did. I taught myself with the help of Mel Bay’s Big Book of Chords and some dyslexic reading. That’s how I ended up playing guitar upside down and backwards all these years (as Elizabeth Cotton and Albert King played).” In 1967 Bob, playing a ’65 powder blue Fender Jaguar with a built in fuzz switch, formed his first band Carlisle Wheeling; the band performed many of Bob’s originals and covers such as Love’s “7 & 7 Is”.

In 1969, the Beland family relocated to Napa, California in the San Francisco Bay area. Bob’s formal music training paid off as he quickly formed a 7-piece band called Mason, named after their incredible lead singer Deki Mason. Bob fondly recalls, “It was a flat out hippie experience on the tail end of the summer of love.” He soon began writing songs with Mason and another outfit called Bootleg while doing shows with the likes of Big Brother & The Holding Co., Cold Blood, Sons of Champlin, Grootna, Little John, Country Joe & The Fish, and Tower of Power at places like The Keystone in Berkeley, Pepperland in San Rafael, The Inn of the Beginning in Cotati, the Napa Fairgrounds and The Napa State Sanitarium. At the time, Bob’s musical influences grew by leaps and bounds, which included many West Coast acts like the Buffalo Springfield, Linda Ronstadt, the Beach Boys, the Byrds and the Turtles, along with many of the solo singer/songwriters popular at the time. By 1973, he moved back to Los Angeles and formed a band called Southpaw with Jules Shear and Deki Mason Farwell. The band’s name was derived from the fact that Bob and Jules were both left-handed, upside down guitar players.

During this time Bob frequented famed LA nightclub the Troubadour where he met a then unknown Tom Waits. Bob recalls, “Back at the club I remember seeing Tom Waits audition for the first time at the Monday night ‘Hoots’ (open mic). He had just taken the bus up from San Diego. The club wasn’t opened yet but a few of the employees were working inside. The waitresses and staff all stopped setting up the club while he auditioned. He really got everyone’s attention. After his audition I met him in the dressing room upstairs and asked if he was looking for a guitar player (ah, poor misguided youth!), from which he said, ‘Well, as you can see I already play guitar so I kind of got that covered Bob.’ We shook hands, talked and ended up sharing a meatball sandwich from Dan Tanas next door to the club. It was fun knowing Tom back then.”

After the demise of Southpaw, Bob did session work for various west coast artists including Peter Allen, Fantasy Records recording artist Byron Keith Daugherty, songwriter Steve Gillette and renowned Hall Of Fame musician Graham Nash of the Hollies/CSN&Y fame. He also formed the band Bates Motel with Southpaw bassist Les Bohem and the band played many of the clubs on the LA strip including the Whiskey Au Go-Go, The Starwood, The Club Lingerie, The Central and Madame Wong’s, working with groups like The Motels, The Runaways, The Plimsouls, The Pop, The Zippers and The Knack. In 1980, after passing on becoming lead guitarist for the legendary Rick Nelson, Bob signed an exclusive songwriters deal with the help of Randy Pitch from MCA Publishing and released an EP on Chris Ashford’s What Records produced by Stephen Hague (Pet Shop Boys, Blur, Robbie Robertson, the Pretenders, Jules & The Polar Bears). The EP included the song and title track “Stealing Cars”, which was released earlier as a single on Mike Lembo’s Deli Platter records. The EP featured Jules Shear, Stephen Hague, Ian Hoffman (the drummer with Southpaw), Gary Richwine and David Beebe (both from Jules & the Polar Bears) and guitarist Kevin Dwyer. A review of the EP in New York’s Slash magazine called Beland “the worst influence on western civilization” – quite a compliment coming from such a dignified music rag such as them! Bob recalls, “I remember hearing ‘Stealing Cars’ for the first time on Jed the Fish’s show at KROQ-FM, the big station in LA at that time. It was the first time I had ever heard one of my recordings on the air and there I was hearing it on the crappy car stereo – I loved it! I almost crashed the car!”

After Bob’s deal with MCA expired he joined The Furys, one of LA’s original punk bands led by Jeff Wolfe and Greg Embrey. Along with playing clubs throughout Los Angeles, the group recorded an EP, ‘Indoor/Outdoor’ on their own King Coitus Records label. The record was pressed at EMI’s manufacturing facility in Christchurch, New Zealand and the album artwork was designed by Bob and his future wife Mary Roth. After The Furys, Bob went on to play with Skin Trade, an eclectic, somewhat progressive unit fronted by Dickies guitarist Glen Laughlin. In 1993, Bob returned to his solo career and recorded the critically acclaimed CD ‘Amnesia Lane,’ released independently on his own label Seeing i Records. In 2008 Bob released two albums on his newly enacted Wrong Way Works label: ‘The Evening Shade’ featuring mostly original instrumental pieces, and ‘Life Begins…’, a new collection of songs. Says Bob, “I had Jules, Deki, Severin Browne, Stew & Heidi from the LA band The Negro Problem and Broadway hit ‘Passing Strange,’ John Beland, Mark Lennon (from the LA band Venice) and Doug Powell sing on the album ‘Life Begins…’, along with Ian Hoffman on percussion, chromatic harmonica legend Tommy Morgan (“Good Vibrations”, “Pet Sounds”, “Rainy Days & Mondays”, “Theme From Green Acres”), classical violinist Paula Kuhr from The MESTO Orchestra and Furys/Motels/Gary Valentine & the Know bassist Richard d’Andrea.” Once again, the CD showcased Bob’s unique songwriting, arranging and musical prowess.

Which brings us to the year 2013 and the latest CD release by Bob Beland the wonderful ‘Mar Vista’. Bob expounds, “This time around I wrote, produced, recorded and sang all the songs along with playing all of the instruments on all the tracks except one song, ‘Speed Of Life’, that features world percussionist T.J. Troy, from the multi-ethnic classical orchestra MESTO. There’s both songs and instrumental work on ‘Mar Vista.’ Two of the instrumental tracks, ‘Overnight (in retrograde)’ and ‘Beautiful Embrace no.2 pastoral (in retrograde)’, are part of another concept I have for the orchestra called ‘Forward & Backworks’ that I am releasing to coincide with ‘Mar Vista.’ The concept behind ‘Forward & Backworks’ is the discovery of what happens when an entire piece of music is performed both forward and backwards. It can be both breathtaking and astounding. I sometimes think of music in retrograde as ‘music from the 4th dimension.’”

Guitar Legend Peter Banks Passes – July 15, 1947 – March 7, 2013

London, UK – Best known for his innovative and unique guitar work with YES and Flash, as well as his own critically acclaimed solo albums, guitar legend Peter Banks passed away at his home in London on March 7, 2013. Banks, a founding member of the ground breaking progressive rock group YES, performed on the band’s first two albums, ‘Yes’ and ‘Time And A Word’. He would go on to form Flash and release 3 well-received albums (Flash, In The Can, Out Of Our Hands), along with several successful tours of Europe and the US, culminating in an appearance on the widely watched late night American TV show ‘The Midnight Special’. With an admitted fondness for improvisation, music critics touted Banks as a cross between Pete Townshend and Wes Montgomery. Even Pete Townshend, one night after witnessing a YES performance, walked up to Banks, slapped him on the back and said, “You’re great!”

After Flash, Peter Banks would form the band Empire in the mid ’70s and eventually release 3 albums ‘Mark I’ ‘Mark II’ and ‘Mark III’. During his career, Banks would release 5 solo albums (Two Sides Of…, Instinct, Self-Contained, Reduction, Can I Play You Something?) and had been active in recent times working with acts such as Harmony and Diversity, Prog Collective, ANT-BEE and Days Between Stations. Banks first solo album ‘Two Sides Of Peter Banks’ has been considered by many as one of the great ‘prog’ records of all time and features an all-star line-up of Jan Akkerman, Phil Collins and John Wetton. In the early 2000′s Banks wrote his autobiography ‘Beyond & Before’ published by Golden Treasures publishing in the US. Peter was putting on the final touches of the log awaited live recording ‘FLASH – IN PUBLIC’ CD set for release on Cleopatra Records at the time of his passing.

“I loved working with Peter on the many records I have produced over the years, he always delivered amazing stuff, creative, inspires and always with that classic original YES flavor that came with his playing. He will be missed by me and many many other fans of his music and playing.” – Billy Sherwood

Peter Banks will always be remembered as one of the pioneers of progressive rock guitar and will be missed by musicians worldwide.
